What is Your Role As a Surgical Technologist at This Point?
As a Surgical Technologist at this point, my role is to provide support to the surgical team throughout the entire perioperative process. This includes preparing and setting up the operating room before surgery; passing instruments and other necessary supplies to the surgeon during surgery; assisting in patient positioning, draping, and prepping; and helping with specimen collection or laboratory testing. I am also responsible for scrubbing into procedures as needed, maintaining sterile technique while handling equipment, and disposing of contaminated items afterwards.
Following each procedure, it is important that I help clean up the OR by removing debris left over from surgery. Additionally, I must ensure that all instruments are accounted for at the conclusion of each case so nothing gets lost or misplaced. Lastly but certainly not least importantly, I provide emotional support to patients prior to their surgeries as well as post-operatively when they wake up from anesthesia.
